On Wednesday Netflix will announce its quarterly earnings for Q4 of 2009, and by all accounts the news should be good for investors. Business Week is reporting that Netflix should pass the 12 million subscriber mark for the first time, and should also indicate more use of its streaming movie service as more and more Americans obtain broadband access, and Netflix continues to add titles to its streaming library.
The biggest gain in terms of distribution in the 4th quarter of 2009 was it’s widely publicized addition of the Playstation 3 as distribution platform for its streaming services. As Netflix continues to expand its reach into the living room, movie studios are looking for ways to recoup the earnings they once enjoyed before Netflix provided same-day DVD releases to its customer’s mailboxes.
In total, Netflix is expected to announce earnings of 45 cents per share on revenue of $446 million.

As if hulu wasn’t bad enough for Netflix’s streaming movie ambitions, Google has announced it plans to make movies available through YouTube for rental. Youtube has a vast amount of regular users, and for some watching movies through their already existing internet connection on a site they already visit often will make sense. However the advantage that Netflix has over a Youtube at this point is integration into living room contact points, such as the XBOX 360, PS3, and soon to be Nintendo Wii. This helps makes access to the digital content easier to consume. The challenge for Youtube and Google will be to get these types of partnerships that allows YouTube to penetrate living rooms like Netflix has already.

In a move that signals the tip of the iceberg for content delivery of the future, Netflix has agreed to wait 28 days to make available new titles from Time Warner, allowing Time Warner to cash in on the lucrative DVD sales that studios so cherish when movies are released to DVD. In exchange, Netflix for its part receives access to a larger library of content that it can make available for streaming, something the company desperately needs to grow that aspect of its business. It remains to be seen if other studios will follow in Time Warner’s footsteps to allow Netflix greater access to its libraries for streaming in exchange for more DVD sales.

In recent news, Nintendo and Netflix have announced that the Wii will soon have the ability to stream digital movies directly through the console, much like its competitors in the game console market, the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3. The main difference between the Wii Netflix streaming and the the other consoles will be the absence of High Definition (HD) video quality, since the Wii does not support HD video. This may put a damper on the enthusiasm of those persons hoping to enjoy the NetFlix streaming experience they may enjoy through their PCs already.
